• Petals

What need have I for romance

in the flickering lights of candles

    and the sheen of raindrops

glistening on the petals of love ?

Do angels not serenade the morning sun

Even for those who walk a solitary path?

Does birdsong ring silent to lone souls

Do the waves not ebb and flow for all to see,

Do still waters only shimmer for lovers?

Does music not soothe the sole soul?

Do our hearts remain untouched by its soft notes?

Caressing like feathers in the wind,

Lifting us high above the mortal plain,

    Healing wounds, washing away pain.

Do the world's wonders play shy

Masking their loveliness away from our eye

A glimpse caught only by souls entwined

Or may I be left breathless at beauty's door?

    Can my heart not dance

to the beat of a thousand solitary drums

echoing the sound of my heartbeat

like the fluttering wings of a dove

    softly caressing like sunshine.

    Floating alone but not lonely,

    Delighting in the world's beauty

    Unfettered by humdrum monotony

A butterfly floating in the crisp cool breeze of life.

  • Ship

I am a solitary ship on the love ocean

bobbing and weaving on the waves

    sometimes weathering strong storms

feeling the hurt as it batters me side to side

    holding steadfastly as the motion

rocks and crashes, destroys and bashes

into the sides of me making gaping gashes

I bleed into the water, but the waves won't win

I am strong and my ship is a powerhouse

I can see the shore but I am content here

I have no co-captain, so no chance of mutiny

soon I will be floating, simply boating,

coasting along I will have fought and won

I'm not sad though I may be the solitary one

my vessel carries me through it all

the seagulls fly all around my sails

my hope in love and life prevails.

I sometimes stop along the shore,

find refreshment and rest in an island haven

but soon it is time to depart once more

new adventures to discover and explore

Until I find my island paradise

I am not ready to set my anchor down.

  • Thought tempest

Thoughts come whirring into my brain,

    pounding dripping pouring like rain

then subtle as the kiss of butterfly wings on a flower

gentle as a cool april shower

soothing like balm spreading its calm

then crashing splashing like waves ebbing and flowing

    warm like embers softly glowing

    then burning charring maiming scarring

    taunting teasing and mocking

trying to hurt me and make me feel small

taking my safety net so I've nowhere to fall.

One minute so strong am I,

spreading my wings out to the sky

Happy in my solitude, content in my shell

then suddenly I'm pushed off the cliff

but I don't fly I plunge down down down,

my head's underwater I'm starting to drown

help me swim up help me fight

don't let these thoughts swallow me up tonight.

  • Here is another poem I wrote several years ago, for remembrance day.  I am adding it to this blog as I feel it fits today as it did then.
